Flat Branch PlanOn November 4, 2008 Mecklenburg County voters approved $250 in Park Bond projects.  One of these projects called for the creation of a nature preserve in south Charlotte, at the intersection of Tom Short and Audrey Kell Roads.

The site is one of the largest upland mafic depressions (swamp forests) remaining in Mecklenburg County.  The conceptual plan for the 44-acre preserve is moving forward; and the second community workshop was held in October 2008.  The plan includes a pedestrian access along Tom Short Road, parking, restroom/shelter, and a one mile loop trial with boardwalks and observation decks.  Also included are a natural playground and an outdoor classroom space.

We will seek the endorsement of the plan by the Park and Recreation Commission in January 2009 and Board of County Commissioners approval in February.
