Berryhill Nature Preserve

Berryhill Nature Preserve is a 160-acre tract located in west Mecklenburg County. Nestled on the southeastern shore of Paw Creek, a major tributary of the Catawba River/Lake Wylie, the preserve is home to a diversity of forest habitats. Most notably, the shoreline and adjacent 500’ buffer comprise a North Carolina Natural Heritage Site (NC Natural Heritage Program) featuring mature hardwood forests.

Location and Directions
Berryhill Nature Preserve is located in far west Mecklenburg County a short distance from the intersection of Interstate 485 and Highway 29/74.

Getting There
Take Exit 9 (Highway 29/74 West) from Interstate 485. Go 2 miles and take a left on Old Dowd Road. Go 3 miles and take a right on Walkers Ferry Road. Go 2 miles to the intersection of Walkers ferry and Hadlow Court at the southern edge of the preserve.
Note: This preserve currently DOES NOT provide any amenities. There are no restrooms, trails, parking, or other amenities. Limited roadside pull-offs can be found along the marked boundary of the preserve.

History and Description
One hundred acres were purchased in 1990 to create Berryhill Nature Preserve, named after the neighborhood community where it is located. An additional 56-acres was added in 2000 bringing the total acreage to 156. The site is one of a few remaining large, undeveloped waterfront properties on Lake Wylie. It had been previously designated by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation to serve as a “District Park” for the rapidly urbanizing West Mecklenburg community. As a result of the 2008 Park and Recreation Comprehensive Mater Plan, which included citizen input, staff recommendations, and professional gap analysis, this site was formally designated as a Nature Preserve. It will be protected in perpetuity for watershed protection, natural communities’ protection, and the provision of passive recreation opportunities.

Amenities
Berryhill Nature Preserve does not currently provide any amenities. There are currently no plans to provide even limited amenities (trailhead, trash cans, etc.) at this site. Prior to any substantial improvements this site would undergo a Master Plan process and would require capital funding; neither item is currently under development. We will keep this site posted with any future details. Please call Michael Campbell, Park and Recreation Manager if you have questions 704-504-9346.

Flora & Fauna
Berrryhill Nature Preserve preserves habitat for numerous species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. In the areas along Paw Creek Natural Heritage Site rich Pacolet soils contribute to a diverse understory including native herbaceous species such as cranefly orchid, little brown jug, downy rattlesnake orchid, foamflower, round-lobed hepatica, Christmas fern, and grape fern. Large in tact forest along area watersheds are critically important as we strive to protect our drinking water and that of those who live downstream.
