Improving Health and Fitness within the Community

Bette Rae Thomas Rec CenterMecklenburg County Health Assessment Reports for 2012 and 2013 identify the top health issue in the county as Chronic Disease Prevention. Locally and nationally, cancer and cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and stroke) are the leading causes of mortality. Other leading causes of death and disability include lower chronic respiratory disease (COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis), diabetes and kidney disease. Alzheimer’s is a leading cause of death for individuals 45 years of age or older. Asthma, while not a leading cause of death, is a chronic condition that causes widespread disability. Arthritis may also be a debilitating disability, primarily for seniors

 Healthy Charlotte Council

 The Healthy Charlotte Council is focused on helping make Charlotte nationally recognized for its healthy initiatives and robust health services industry. Their goal is to support the achievement of a top 10 ranking in the American Fitness Index within the next five years. The American Fitness Index is produced by the American College of Sports Medicine and is a nationally recognized and celebrated tool for determining the health of a community and its people.

Through the involvement of chamber members who care about and contribute to the goal of a Healthy Charlotte, the council has set the bold goal to support the achievement of a top 10 ranking in the American Fitness Index within the next five years.

Key action items include:

  • Identify key indicators of the index and track status.
  • Establish connectivity with pertinent organizations to drive community collaboration.
  • Increase national reputation of Charlotte as a health care hub.
