Developmental Milestones

Successful intervention depends on identifying needs and providing services and supports early. The following is a checklist to see if your child is meeting the developmental milestones during the first year of life.

1st Year Developmental Milestones


1 month

 

7 months

  • Lifts head when on tummy
  • Looks at faces

 

  • Creeps (pulls body with arm and leg kicks)
  • Uses hands to pat, touch, stroke

 

 

 

2 months

 

8 months

  • Makes sounds — coos and gurgles
  • Follows objects with eyes

 

  • Crawls
  • Pulls self up to standing

 

 

 

 

3 months

 

9 months

  • Recognizes your face
  • Holds head steady and upright

 

  • Says “Ma-ma” or “Da-da”
  • Responds to own name

 

 

 

 

4 months

 

10 months

  • Smiles, laughs
  • Rolls from back to side

 

  • Waves bye-bye
  • Drinks from a cup when held

 

 

 

 

5 months

 

11 months

  • Holds out arms to be held
  • Likes to play peek-a-boo

 

  • ”Walks” holding onto furniture
  • Picks up small objects

 

 

 

 

6 months

 

12 months

  • Copies sounds
  • Rolls over in both directions

 

  • Uses simple gestures
  • Knows at least three words
  • Finger feeds self
