 Elder Abuse Training:  Who Do I Call?

2013 is the Year of Elder Abuse Prevention Awareness.  The Centralina Area Agency on Aging, Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services and Levine Senior Center are partnering to offer this 2.5 CEU course on identifying and reporting concerns about potential elder mistreatment.  Individual agency trainers will focus on:
 
  1. How to make an Adult Protective Service (APS) referral.
  2. What options and steps should be taken to get help before making an APS call.
  3. Domestic Violence issues among seniors
  4. Guardianship
  5. Role of police and other law enforcement

Cost:  $10 includes handouts, refreshments and CEU's.

A monthly group for parents, guardians, and caregivers that is facilitated by a Therapeutic Recreation staff person but is directed by the group members. This informal group gives participants the opportunity to meet and talk with other parents and caregivers who are experiencing the challenges of parenting a child, teen or young adult with a disability.

New Support Group - Spill Your Beans
A support group for young women with disabilities ages 16 and up.  Meetings are held once a month at Caribou Coffee on Park Rd.  Covered topics include safety, relationships, health and beauty and more.  For more information, contact Ariel Kliem, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, at 704-432-4327 or email.
 
Support Opportunities
Fibromyalgia / Chronic Pain Support Group
Offers support/education for people with fibromyalgia.  Meets the third Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Arthritis Services office.  Please refrain from wearing fragrances to the meetings.  Pre-registration required - call 704-331-4878.
 
Individual Counseling/Relaxation Training
Counseling is available by appointment to help deal with the emotional aspects of living with chronic illness/pain and to learn relaxation techniques.  Call 704-331-4878 for more information or an appointment.
 
Educational Opportunities
Information and Referral Services Arthritis Nurse Consultation
Health Professionals available to meet with individuals or upon request to speak for community groups about arthritis, Fibromyalgia and osteoporosis.

Federal Inclusive Health Information

 

These plans are available to all ages.  If you have been denied coverage or given an exclusion due to a medical condition and have been uninsured for 6 months or more, you are eligible for the Federal Plan provided you do not have access to a group plan. if you have had insurance within the last 6 months you may be eligible for the state plan. You do not need to exhaust Cobra to go on this plan. Qualifiers can be that you are simply paying more for your current independent plan.  The plans are not free but some subsidies may be available.
