Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. The bacteria usually attacks the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.
In 2014, a total of 22 cases (2.2 cases per 100,000 persons) were reported in Mecklenburg, nearly 50% lower than for 2013. While reported cases have decreased, the contagious nature of the disease and the emergence of drug-resistant strains make TB a continued public health threat.
