Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. The bacteria usually attacks the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.
In 2016, a total of 32 cases (3.1 cases per 100,000 persons) were reported in Mecklenburg County. While both TB reports and case rates for 2016 were higher than the previous two years, overall case reporting in the county remains at an all time low.
