The Mecklenburg County Food and Facilities Sanitation Program is a component of the Environmental Health Division of the Mecklenburg County Health Department. The mandated program is administered by the local Health Department pursuant to Chapter 130A of the General Statutes of North Carolina.
There are over 2700 food service facilities operating in Mecklenburg County and the number is increasing daily. F&FS Program staff issue permits for operation of these facilities and are required to conduct over 10,000 facility inspections per year to help maintain high levels of sanitation in the protection of public healthEmployees in the program work for the Mecklenburg County Health Department. Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHSs) by the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners, and to meet authorization requirements set by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The F&FS Program offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 AM until 5 PM, except for County holidays or other days as approved by the County Manager or Board of Commissioners. Staff are on call to handle emergencies that occur after hours or on holidays. Emergency contact is initiated by calling the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
In addition, staff review plans for new construction, existing facilities and remodeling of facilities, investigate requests of insanitary conditions and poor food handling practices, and provide educational information to workers to help prevent foodborne illnesses. Program employees are responsible for enforcing state statutes, rules, and local ordinances governing a number of different types of facilities.
