Mecklenburg County Health Department, through a grant from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), is conducting a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of a portion of the northern extension of the Charlotte Area Transit System's (CATS) light rail Blue Line. The line is being extended 9.3 miles from Charlotte's center city to the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The extension is expected to impact over 28,000 university students, faculty, and staff, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods, retail centers and area businesses. The HIA project will focus on the impact of connecting the two northernmost stations on the line to the campus and how those connections can provide a safe and health-promoting route for students, faculty, staff, residents and customers to destinations in that area. The overarching topics of the project will be impacts on the environment, housing, access to transportation options and campus policies.
January 28, 2015, the University of North Carolina Charlotte and the Mecklenburg County Health Department co-hosted a stakeholder workshop with representation from interested agencies and organizations to provide background information on the project, an overview of HIA, and a tour of the future UNCC station. July 30, 2015, stakeholders were invited to the Mecklenburg County Health Department's southeast location for an update on the BLE HIA project. The
workshop agenda, an
update on the construction of the Blue Line Extension and an
