North Tryon Master Planning Project
A consortium of Charlotte institutions are joining forces to launch a master planning process for North Tryon (see map below).
The planning process will examine and deliver on to two objectives.
1) The project’s more global objective is a plan to examine the repositioning of North Tryon’s underutilized land and structures. This element of the project will address the area’s urban design and infrastructure needs and formulate ideas and strategies to catalyze development.
2) The project’s secondary objective is the creation of a cohesive concept for the development of a campus district around the Sixth and Seventh Street blocks of Tryon and Church streets as well as surrounding property.
Charlotte Center City Partners and Foundation For The Carolinas are co-leading the planning process. Additional funders and steering committee members include: Arts & Science Council, Bank of America, City of Charlotte, Discovery Place, Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library, Mecklenburg County and NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
The Steering Committee will select a consultant team to assist them in conducting the planning study. Firms under consideration will participate in a selection process launched in November 2013 and concluded in January. Formal announcement of the selected firm is planned for February 2014.
The timeframe for the project is March – October 2014. A plan for sharing a community engagement process with citizens and North Tryon stakeholders will be shared in March 2014.
