Mechanical/Plumbing/
Fuel Gas Journeyman/Mechanic License Requirements

Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement Department has eliminated the Journeyman Plumber and Mechanical/Fuel Gas Mechanic testing and licensing program as of January 1, 2013.

The North Carolina Board of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors will offer Technician (Journeyman's) Licensing starting January 1, 2013.  The NCPHFSC Board Technician licensing will replace all but one of the Mechanical/Plumbing Fuel Gas licenses in the Mecklenburg County Building Ordinance.

The NCPHFSC Board will allow current active license holders to be grandfathered in and receive technician licenses without testing for Plumbing, Heating Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Fuel Gas Piping upon sending in the proper forms to the licensing board prior to December 31, 2012.

The information on reciprocity with local Journeyman's Certifications is included on the licensing boards' web site in the September 2012 newsletter.  See pages 8, 9, 10 and 11.  To access the web site go to the following link www.nclicensing.org.

Renewal for current Mecklenburg County certified Contractor/Journeyman's/Mechanic Licenses will not be affected by the change.  They may be renewed at the option of the certificate holder.  NOTE:  Decorative Appliance Contractor licenses will be valid in Mecklenburg County as long as they remain active in the system.

Active Journeyman Plumber and Mechanics licenses issued by Mecklenburg County prior to January 1, 2013 will be grandfathered in by ordinance and be recognized as equivalent to the North Carolina Board of Plumbing Heating and Fire Sprinkler Boards Plumbing, Heating Group 1, Heating Group 2, Heating Group 3 and Fuel Piping Technician licenses.
