Registered Motor Vehicles

Vehicle Tax Bills

Information on registered motor vehicles is secured by Federal law to preserve the privacy and welfare of citizens. While other property information is accessible to the public, vehicle data is restricted to those with an official need-to-know. Therefore, owners who are seeking assistance on valuations and tax bills for their vehicles must have their bills or registration to receive help specific to their situations.

Tag & Tax Together Program

North Carolina implemented a new program to combine vehicle registration renewal and vehicle property tax collection into one system under the NC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  The Tag & Tax Together program provides for payment of license tag renewal and vehicle tax at the same time.

For more information, visit NC DMV Tag and Tax.

Renewals and New Issue Registrations

Vehicle owners receive a Tag & Tax Notice listing both vehicle registration fees and taxes due. The notices come approximately 60 days before the expiration of the vehicle registration. The Department of Motor Vehicles now collects vehicle taxes at the same time owners renew their license tags.

With Tag & Tax Together, annual registration fees and vehicle property taxes are paid to the NCDMV in person at a local tag office, online at the NCDMV website or by mail. This information is also located on the back of the notice. The State collects the taxes and distributes the revenue back to the County, who then distributes the portions due to Charlotte and the Towns.

Under the current system, inspections are required before registration stickers are granted.

Vehicle owners will be unable to renew their motor vehicle’s registration unless the total taxes and registration fees on the vehicle are paid at the same time.

If paying by mail, the registration fee is considered to be made on the date shown on the postmark stamped by the United States Postal Service. If the mailed fee is not postmarked to show the date of mailing, the payment is considered to be made on the date the Division receives the payment.

Vehicle registration and Late Fees

Effective January 1, 2016, for passenger vehicle and/or small truck under 4,000 lbs., the registration fee is $36.00. For additional information, please visit the NCDOT.

  • 1st month- $15.00
  • 2nd month- $20.00
  • A late fee of $25.00 will be charged for registration that have been expired for two months or greater.
Please note, interest of 5% will still be charged if payment is received on or after 16th of each month and ¾% each additional month.
