Individual Personal Property

Individual Personal Property is property owned by an individual or individuals for personal use. If the property is located in Mecklenburg County, or stored or housed at a storage facility, marina or aircraft hangar in Mecklenburg County as of January 1st, it is taxable in Mecklenburg County.

The following items are considered taxable personal property in North Carolina and are required to be listed by the owner and are subject to tax based on their January 1st value. Property tax rates are based on the physical location of the property.

Examples of individual property
(Boats, Aircraft, Mobile Homes, Unregistered vehicles/motorcycles, Trailers, Campers and RVs)

The Personal Property Appraisers use January 1st pricing guides for the type of property being valued as the primary resource. In some cases, an alternative method - like depreciation or comparable pricing - may be used.

If you own personal property that must be listed and did not receive a listing form, you may download a copy, or contact the Assessor’s Office at 704-336-6394 or IPPemail@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov to receive a form.

If your mailing address or physical location of the property has changed during the past year and you have not updated your address with the Assessor, you must fill out the address change form to update our records.

If you are over the age of 65 or totally and permanently disabled, or a disabled veteran with a service-connected disability, you may qualify for tax relief on a mobile home that serves as your primary residence.

Sold or Moved Property

If you have sold or junked property for which you have received a listing or discovery, you must provide proof of the sale, or some other compelling evidence that you did not own the property as of January 1st.

The following are examples of proof:
  • A Bill of Sale signed by both the seller and the buyer with contact information for the buyer (new owner)
  • A title in the new owner’s name
  • Cancellation of insurance for the property
  • Receipt for charitable donation of property
  • Receipt from the person or company receiving the junked property

If you have moved the property out of Mecklenburg County (or North Carolina), you must provide proof that the property was moved out of the County prior to January 1st of the taxing year.

The following are examples of proof:
  • Update to wildlife registration showing your watercraft in another county or out of state
  • Tax bill for the property from another county
  • Copy of contract for a storage facility, marina, aircraft hangar or mobile home park outside of Mecklenburg County showing the date your property transferred to their facility.

If the property was sold or moved after January 1st of the taxing year, you are still responsible to list the property and pay the related tax bill usually mailed in the fall.
