Third Annual Runway 5K Run Sets Record

The third annual Runway 5K Run held Saturday, October 31, 2009 drew 1,881 participants. It was the biggest turnout in the Run's history, more than tripling 2008 participants' numbers.  Runners and walkers were treated to a unique course that began at the southwest end of the Airport's airfield inside the fenced area and followed alongside one of the Airport's busy runways with exciting airplane activity.

Funds raised from the Run will go toward LifeSpan's Community Activity and Employment Transition Program (CAET).  A check to LifeSpan will be presented at a later date. LifeSpan, a nonprofit organization, assists children and adults with developmental disabilities by providing education, employment and enrichment opportunities that promote inclusion, choice, family supports and other best practices.  Fourteen LifeSpan participants currently work at CLT with the majority working as restroom attendants.

This year's male and female winners each received US Airways airline gift cards valued at $500. Male and female baby jogger winners received round trip tickets from JetBlue Airways.

Event sponsors included Charlotte Douglas International Airport, US Airways, Turner, Wilson Air Center, The AeroClinic, Toyota Scion Concord, JetBlue Airways, Edison Foard, Inc., 107.9 The Link!, HMSHost and ValleyCrest. Volunteer organizations included the Aviation Department, the Charlotte Fire Department, Clover High School and Butler High School.

Thanks to everyone who participated and volunteered in this year's Run.   Hope to see you in October 2010 for the Fourth Annual Runway 5K Run.
