Charlotte's 27,000 small businesses and 64,000 sole proprietors help drive the local economy. In celebration of National Small Business Week, the City of Charlotte is coordinating an enhanced local Small Business Week, May 16 - 20, 2011. This effort is part of the City's Small Business Strategic Plan to celebrate, educate, and develop business relationships with the City’s small businesses.
According to the US Small Business Administration, every year since 1963, the President of the United States has proclaimed National Small Business Week to recognize the contributions of small businesses to the economic well-being of America. In 2011, National Small Business Week will honor the estimated 27.2 million small businesses in America. Small businesses are major contributors to the strength of the American economy. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business. They also create 60-80 percent of new jobs in the country. Small businesses drive innovation, create 21st century jobs and increase U.S. competitiveness.
Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx and the Charlotte City Council will kick off the City's Small Business Week activities on Monday, May 16 with a breakfast and the unveiling of the City’s newest small business resource – a small business web portal geared towards Charlotte’s small business owners or future owners. There will be more than 25 events and activities held throughout Charlotte over the course of the week. All the events and activities are geared towards helping Charlotte's small businesses improve their business operations and grow their sales.
