Kenneth R. Harris (1977-1979)

Public Service:
A native of Iredell County, Ken Harris served one term on the Charlotte City Council in 1973-75 before becoming Mayor of the city. In 1977 Harris became the first Republican to be elected Mayor of Charlotte. He was also the first Mayor to preside over a City Council elected by districts as well as at-large representatives.

Personal:
Harris attended Charlotte College (now the University of North Carolina at Charlotte) and later went on to Chapel Hill to earn a degree in business. He joined North Carolina National Bank (now Bank of America) as a trust officer and 10 years later entered the insurance business. He formed Harris Plans, an insurance and investment firm. He is a licensed pilot and a former Air National Guard officer.

During his Administration:

Charlotte voters chose to elect seven of their City Council representatives from districts in 1977.
Liquor by the drink received voter approval on September 9, 1978.
