Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road/Brookshire Blvd

Mt. Holly-Huntersville/NC 16
This project will improve the intersection through potential turn lanes, median work and a traffic signal.

What's happened? Charlotte's Transportation Department (CDOT) has performed analysis to determine the lanes required and land surveying is underway.
Due to increased funding by NCDOT, expanded improvements are now being planned for the intersection. NCDOT has taken over the design, construction and implementation of the project.

The original project was a $250,000 right turn lane on westbound Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road.  Upon obtaining valuable input from citizens and business owners through the public involvement process, NCDOT agreed to partner with the City on this project (in the amount of $350,000) to achieve a larger scope of improvements.  City staff also discovered the potential of private funding for the traffic signal at Couloak and Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road.

Proposed improvements for Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road include:
  • Eastbound right turn lane (original scope)
  • Median construction from existing to Couloak Drive
  • Signal at Couloak Drive (paid by private funds)
  • Convert existing pavement to two through lanes(from Walmart entrance to Couloak Drive)
  • Add second north bound left turn lane on Brookshire Boulevard

Objective:
  • Improve capacity of the intersection to accommodate the heavy right turn movements going to I-485.
  • Improve access to surrounding driveways.

Cost:  $TBD
