Fifth Street Sidewalk & Storm Drainage Improvements

Fifth Street Sidewalk Project
The project will improve pedestrian safety at the intersection of Fifth and N. College streets.

What's happened? Design plans for the project are 100% complete. The project was bid on March 22. City Council awarded the construction contract to Blythe Development Company on April 9.

What's next?
Construction should begin in mid-May and be complete in August. See below for traffic control details.

This project will provide a wider sidewalk, street trees and improved lighting along the northeast side of Fifth Street from the light rail crossing to North College Street. It will also improve pedestrian safety by reconfiguring the curb radius on the opposite side.

Note: This project will be bid and constructed in conjunction with the North College Storm Drainage project. The College Street storm drainage work will provide improvements to the storm drain pipe system under College Street from Fifth Street to Trade Street.

Objectives:

Improve pedestrian safety
Minimize disruption by combining project construction with storm drainage project at N. College Street.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

College Street:

Between Trade Street and Fifth Street, College Street will close at 6 p.m. Friday, July 27 and will reopen to one lane of traffic at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 28.
All lanes will reopen by noon Sunday July 29. Motorists on College Street can detour using Trade Street, Caldwell Street and Sixth Street.

Fifth Street:

Between College Street and the LYNX Light Rail track, Fifth Street will close at 11 p.m. Friday, July 27 and will reopen at noon Sunday, July 29. Motorists on Fifth Street can detour using College Street, Seventh Street and Brevard Street.

Cost: $800,000
Please note that the project costs includes all costs associated with the project such as planning and design, utility relocation, construction, signalization, permits and landscaping.

Traffic Control:
Construction for 5th Street sidewalk and N. College Street storm drainage work will begin in early May. During this time, temporary traffic control will exist between 4th Street and 6th Street on North College Street and on 5th Street between Church Street and Brevard Street.
