Fifth Street Sidewalk & Storm Drainage Improvements

Fifth Street Sidewalk Project
The project will improve pedestrian safety at the intersection of Fifth and N. College streets.

What's happened?
Design plans for the project are 100% complete. The project was bid on March 22. City Council awarded the construction contract to Blythe Development Company on April 9.

What's next?

Construction should begin in mid-May and be complete in August. See below for traffic control details.

Who to contact:  Len Chapman, Project Manager 704-336-6750.
This project will provide a wider sidewalk, street trees and improved lighting along the northeast side of Fifth Street from the light rail crossing to North College Street. It will also improve pedestrian safety by reconfiguring the curb radius on the opposite side.

Note: This project will be bid and constructed in conjunction with the North College Storm Drainage project.  The College Street storm drainage work will provide improvements to the storm drain pipe system under College Street from Fifth Street to Trade Street.

Objectives:
  • Improve pedestrian safety
  • Minimize disruption by combining project construction with storm drainage project at N. College Street.
