Intergovernmental Affairs Manager

As the new Intergovernmental Relations Manager for the City of Charlotte, Dana C. Fenton advises the City Manager on policy issues, strategic initiatives, and legislative proposals. He is responsible for providing in-depth policy research and analysis and for lobbying on Federal and State legislation that impacts the City. As the primary liaison among other entities, Fenton is responsible for intergovernmental relations and works with Mecklenburg County, quasi-public sector agencies, and private sector organizations, including the Metropolitan Transit Commission, the National and North Carolina League of Municipalities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the Chamber of Commerce, higher education institutions, and designated advocacy groups. He is responsible for developing and executing the City’s federal agenda and is the City’s principal contact with the its lobbying firm in Washington, D.C.

Fenton joined the City of Charlotte in March 2010 after more than nine years as the Legislative Affairs Director for Prince William County, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. In that capacity he researched, compiled, and recommended action on more than 3,000 bills annually and worked closely with congressional delegations and staff to secure funding for County projects, including
 transportation appropriations. He has nearly 20 years experience in the public sector, including key positions in intergovernmental relations, financial analysis, management, and human resources. He began his public service career in the City of Overland Park, Kansas, and held a number of governmental positions in Johnson County, located in the Kansas City metropolitan area, before moving to Prince William County.

He received his master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University and his bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Fenton is a member of the International City-County Management Association.

He lives in Charlotte with his wife, Amy. They have two children, Erin and Ryan.
