Transit Planning
In Progress
Email Updates
As CATS continues to expand transit options in the area, Art-in-Transit works to enhance the future rider's experience by integrating public art into each capital improvement project.  Each requires a process that includes selecting artists, proposal development in conjunction with the Art-in-Transit Advisory Committee, community outreach, fabrication and installation. Throughout these phases, staff work closely with the artists and project team to ensure the art is of high quality and brings interest to an otherwise standard facility.
Here you will find projects that are in various phases of design or fabrication. Currently, staff is working with artists to integrate art into two large projects:

LYNX Blue Line Extension (BLE)

The BLE is a 9 mile extension of the current LYNX Blue Line.  It will extend north of Center City Charlotte, through NoDa, up through the center of N. Tryon Street and ultimately will terminate on the campus of UNC Charlotte.

The BLE is currently in the final design and bid document phase with portions of the alignment already under construction. The projected opening date is in Spring 2017.

CityLYNX Gold Line

The Gold Line is the first phase of a larger streetcar project. The 1.5 mile line will run from Time Warner Cable Arena to Novant Health.  The project is slated to open in early 2015 and will feature art glass in the windscreen of each passenger shelter.

The line is currently under construction and the art glass is in the fabrication phase.
