When Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant was constructed in 1927, the plant was located in 'the country' -- many miles from the center of town. More than 80 years later, the plant is located in the middle of SouthPark, a thriving business and shopping district in south Charlotte with large residential neighborhoods. As the area has grown, so has a plant that's used more sophisticated technology and increased daily treatment capacity to 20 million gallons.
In 1999, the plant completed a highly successful, $6.5 million odor control project with help and participation from the surrounding community. Since that time, the number of odor complaints has dropped significantly.
Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently improving odor control equipment. During late 2010 through Spring 2011, occasional odor may escape the plant during this project.
