LaWana Mayfield, District 3 Representative

LaWana Mayfield, a Democrat, represents District 3 on Charlotte City Council. She was elected in 2011 and will be serving her second term beginning December 2, 2013.
Previous public service included formerly chairing the Youth and Gang Violence subcommittee of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee, served as an steering committee member with the Mecklenburg Political Action Committee, and as a community advocate with the Charlotte Community Justice Coalition.
She has served as the Grants Committee Chair and as a former Board member of the Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund and as Board Co-Chair of the Ujamaa Institute, (which focuses on philanthropy in the African-American community). Served on the Board of Governors and as National Female Diversity Co-Chair for the Human Rights Campaign and as a Client Casework Supervisor of Disaster Services with the Carolina’s Chapter of the American Red Cross. 
Mayfield received  the Diversity Outreach and Volunteer of the Year awards from the Human Rights Campaign, the Woman of Achievement Community Champion Award from the YWCA, 2012 and 2013 Best of on Q-List  and the Harvey B. Gantt Award from the Young Democrats.
