MLK Holiday Planning Committee
Since 1979, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee (CRC) has assisted local volunteers in organizing activities that honor and advance the civil rights causes championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These events honor Dr. King as a civil rights leader, celebrate equality and opportunity for all and promote harmony between diverse community members. In 1996, the CRC and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation began jointly coordinating our community's MLK Day events.

The MLK Holiday Planning Committee is a volunteer group that plans each year's observance activities, all of which are free and open to the public and are designed to reach out to the entire community and embrace the diverse cultures that define our great city. The number of residents attending these events has steadily grown over the years, from about 3,000 people in 1979 to more than 7,500 in 2010.
