Citizens Academy

Application and Registration is open for the Spring 2013 program.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Training Academy is pleased to provide citizens of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community an opportunity to learn more about the CMPD and our services to the community.

Several years ago we redesigned our Citizens Academy program to a format that will make it more accessible to our citizens.  Under the new format, the workshops are divided into individual sessions that are scheduled throughout the year. Most of the workshops are classified as Community Education Workshops which are open to Mecklenburg County residents.  Citizens are invited to participate in as many of the Community Education Workshops as they desire based on their interest and availability.

There are some practical workshop sessions that are only for citizens who have applied for and have been accepted as Citizens Academy participants.  In order to graduate from the Citizens Academy a participant must complete the workshops as listed in this program guide within a two-year time limit. We believe this new format will allow more citizens the opportunity to participate in this community educational program.

During the workshops citizens will have the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the services of the CMPD from a diverse group of police department personnel.  Topics that are discussed range from the history of the CMPD to Traffic Stops.  It also includes tours of our Training Academy, Command Center, Crime Lab and 911 Communications Room. Workshops will be held mostly on Tuesday evenings and some Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at various Police Department buildings.

We are looking forward to the 2013 workshops as a year of opportunities for citizens to have a greater understanding of our mission and service to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community. Please do not hesitate to contact us at the Training Academy should you have any questions.   You can reach us at 704-432-1655 or by email at mwilliams2@cmpd.org.

We are looking forward to your participation.
