CMPD Officer of the Month

                                    Officer Scott Sweatt

Officer Scott Sweatt is one of two officers from the CMPD nominated Officer of the Month. In January, Officer Sweatt coordinated the investigation of a possible larceny/robbery suspect that was operating throughout the city. The suspect was asking people if he could use their cell phone… 

Once the suspect had the phone in his hand he would take it from them and run or drive away. Officer Sweatt helped crack this complex case.

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

  The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has arrested Dequavious Joseph, DOB: 06/08/1991.  On Saturday, January 29, 2011, at approximately 8:00 p.m. Steele Creek Officers were dispatched to a robbery in progress call in the 7900 block of Shady Oak Trail.  The victim called 911 and stated that an armed man approached him in the parking lot of his apartment complex. The suspect ordered him to get into the trunk of the victims car before the suspect took the victim’s wallet, cell phone and GPS and ran from the scene. 
K9 and the Aviation Unit assisted officers on the ground in  locating a man matching the description of the suspect.  The victims property was also recovered where the suspect was contacted. Dequavious Joseph has been charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and  2nd degree Kidnapping.  No one was injured during this incident.  Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or  RT

Robbery trio arrested

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has arrested Catrell Holloway, DOB: 12/28/1989, Gadarrius Murphy, DOB: 09/27/1989 and Porschia Jordan, DOB: 02/20/1991.


On Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Eastway Division officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Wembley Drive to meet with a woman who had just been robbed.  The woman stated she arrived at the location to look at a car she intended to purchase.  The victim was approached by the suspects, one of them asked to borrow her cell phone.  When the suspect got within reach, he grabbed the victims purse and attempted to take it as another one of the suspects indicated he had a gun and that she needed to give up the purse.  The suspects took her purse and ran towards Central Avenue. 


Officers checked the electronic monitoring proximity report to determine if anyone on EM had been in the area at the time of the robbery.  The data indicated that Catrell Holloway who was on electronic monitoring was present at the location when the robbery occurred.  Officers tracked Holloway’s movements and located him and another suspect in the 900 block of Pondella Drive. 


The victim was transported to that location where she positively identified the suspects as the same who robbed her earlier.  Officers recovered the victims property from one of the suspects. All three suspects have been charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery. 


Catrell Holloway is also facing additional charges stemming from an earlier incident on January 17, 2011,  in which he pointed a gun at a woman on Kentbrook Drive (20110117154300)  Holloway had been placed Electronic Monitoring for a March 11, 2010, armed robbery he committed on Shamrock Drive (20100311215400)RT

Kidnapping/Shooting Suspect Arrested

Shortly before 9:00 a.m., on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Ladrawde Davis, DOB: 01/31/1982, at 3319 Tuckaseegee Road.  Patrol officers with the Metro Division and Freedom Division assisted VCAT with the operation.  Mr. Davis was wanted for the November 19, 2010, kidnapping and shooting of Keyon Heath. 
Ms. Heath was kidnapped by Mr. Davis from Unique Lady Hair Designs, located at 2729 North Tryon Street.  Mr. Davis approached Ms. Heath as she was sitting in her car in the parking lot and forced his way into the car at gunpoint.  When Ms. Heath attempted to jump out of the car, Mr. Davis grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back inside the vehicle.  Mr. Davis then drove to Concord, NC, and pulled into a convenience store, at which point Ms. Heath jumped out of the vehicle in an attempt to escape.  Mr. Davis followed her as she ran into the store and shot her multiple times.  Ms. Heath sustained serious injuries as a result of the shooting. 
The Concord Police Department signed warrants on Mr. Davis charging him with Attempted Murder and Kidnapping.  In addition, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department signed a warrant on Mr. Davis charging him with Kidnapping.  RF

Breaking and Entering suspects arrested


At 10:58 a.m., on Thursday, January 20, 2011, Hickory Grove Division patrol officers were dispatched to a B&E in progress at 7709 Linda Lake Drive.  An alert neighbor called 911 to report suspicious activity at a nearby residence.  The neighbor reported at least person had broken into the residence and that a silver SUV was parked in the driveway. 

Officers arrived on scene within minutes and began a pursuit of the suspect vehicle as it fled the residence and out of the neighborhood onto Harris Boulevard towards The Plaza.  The suspect vehicle fled officers onto I-85 South.  The CMPD pursuit began at approximately 11:04 a.m. and lasted until approximately 11:10 a.m., when Troopers with the NC State Highway Patrol joined the pursuit on I-85 as they approached the exit for I-77. 

The suspects were taken into custody by the NC SHP shortly afterwards, on I-85 at Billy Graham Parkway.  Officers with Hickory Grove are currently transporting both suspects to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office to face the following charges:

Alert neighbor helps CMPD nab B&E suspect

  Freedom Division officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have arrested Toy Adams, DOB: 01/31/1984.  On January 19, 2011, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Freedom Division officers were dispatched to a Breaking and Entering call in progress at Weaver Auto Parts located at 110 N. Hoskins Road.  A neighbor who lived near the store called 911 after  hearing noises coming from the building after business hours.
As officers began to canvas the area they observed a male carrying what appeared to be a heavy bag, walking behind the building at a brisk pace.  The officers made voluntary contact with the man who was later identified as Toy Adams.  Adams opened the bag he was carrying,  inside of the bag officers recovered several different hand tools that are consistent with the type of tools belonging to the business.  The owner of the store met officers on the scene and positively identified the property as belonging to him. The owner also stated that his store has been broken into several times over the last few weeks. 
Toy Adams has been charged with Breaking and Entering with Force, Larceny after B&E and three counts of Assault on a Government Official after spitting at officers as they were trying to place him under arrest.  Detectives are also investigating whether Adams had any involvement in the prior B&E’s at this location.
This case speaks volumes about the importance of community involvement.  CMPD continues to urge the public to call 911 to report anything suspicious.  They may also call in anonymous tips for unsolved cases to our Crime Stoppers tip line at 704-334-1600.  RT

Anonymous tipster identifies robbery suspect

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has made several recent arrests as a result of anonymous tips through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers.


Demetrius Thomas, DOB: 07/25/1991 was arrested in December for a robbery he committed back on November 14, 2010, in the 300 block of Orchard Trace Lane.  The victim in this case stated the suspect pointed a gun at her and her husband before robbing them and unlawfully entered their apartment. 


An anonymous tipster called Crime Stoppers and gave critical information on Thomas’ whereabouts.  On December 1, 2010, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT)

located Thomas in a home in the 4200 block of Howie Circle.  Demetrius Thomas was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Breaking and Entering. 


This is Thomas’ eleventh arrest in Mecklenburg County since 2008. RT

Crime Stoppers tip helps CMPD nab robbery suspects

An anonymous tipster provided information to Crime Stoppers that resulted in the arrests of Tyrell Garnett, DOB: 11/04/1989, and Ayoni Williams, DOB: 08/22/1989, who were both wanted for robbing deliverymen.


On October 10, 2010, Garnett and Williams robbed the victim at gunpoint as he attempted to deliver Chinese Food to a home in the 8200 block of Pence Road. (20101010212903) On November 23, 2010, Garnett and Williams robbed another food deliveryman in the 8200 block of Pence Road. (20101123220600)


Both Garnett and Williams were arrested on December 2, 2010, and charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Common Law Robbery. RT

Independence officers arrest B&E suspect

  Independence Division officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have arrested Emmitt Jamil Carter, DOB: 10/18/1993.  On Sunday, January 2, 2011, officers were dispatched to the 6200 block of Monroe Road after a woman called 911 stating that she witnessed two suspects breaking into cars in the area. The witness gave dispatchers a detailed description of the suspects and their exact location.  A short time later an officer located two young men who matched the description of the suspects.  

The witness was transported to the scene and positively identified Carter as one of the young men responsible for the break in, she could not identify the second suspect.  Carter was arrested and charged with Felony Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle.
