New TV? How to Dispose of an Old One

December 1, 2008

Charlotte, NC -- Great deals and the transition to digital television in February may inspire some Charlotte residents to get a new television now.   If so, what should they do with their old sets?  Schedule it for a bulky item collection!  Here's how:

1. Call 311, the City-County Customer Service Center. When calling residents should indicate they have a television to be collected.   The operator will provide them with a date for collection.  They should place the television at the curb no earlier than 24 hours prior to the scheduled collection.  Placing the television at the curb earlier than 24 hours prior to collection could result in a minimum $50 fine.

2. Schedule a collection online at http://curbit.charmeck.org .  Click the schedule bulky items online link from the homepage and follow the scheduling directions on the site.

Residents may also drop their television at one of the full-service recycling facilities (find the center closest to them they should go to www.wipeoutwaste.com) or donate to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

Properly disposing televisions is environmentally-responsible and helps keep Charlotte green!
