Dispose of Fall Leaves Properly

October 14, 2008

Charlotte, NC -- Did you know that it may be illegal to dispose of yard waste down storm drains or in creeks?

That's because the storm drainage system flows directly to our creeks and lakes without any treatment.

Yard waste, when left to decompose on stream banks, can smother vegetation that stabilize the banks. Yard waste can contribute to stream blockages which may result in flooding.  And, yard waste such as leaves can becomes a water pollutant. Decomposed leaves on the water surface super-fertilizes the water and becomes toxic to the aquatic community.

This natural decomposition, however, make leaves an excellent choice for mulch or compost.  Leaves are a good source of organic material that can be used in your garden  around trees and shrubs.

Or, if you choose, you may dispose of your leaves by placing them at the curb in untied plastic bags or uncovered trash cans that will be collected by the City of Charlotte's Solid Waste Services crews.  Yard waste will be turned in to mulch and compost at our facilities for use by the City and County and is sold to consumers.

Remember, if you use a container for your leaves or other yard waste materials, leave it uncovered and do not put any other trash in that container. Yard waste is collected separately, but on the same day as rollout garbage and recyclables.
