Statement by Police Chief Monroe

June 27, 2008

Charlotte, NC -- I understand that Virginia Commonwealth University issued a statement today that confirms what I have known and said all along – I earned my degree, and I sought no favors from VCU.  I was happy to cooperate in the University's inquiry.  I am disappointed that it took so long to wrap up.

I continue to take great pride in reaching a personal milestone by earning my college degree.  I began working toward that degree many years ago and kept at it as my career took me to different cities and eventually to Richmond.  I plan to continue pursuing my graduate degree while I serve here in Charlotte.

I am deeply appreciative of the warm welcome I have received from the entire Charlotte-Mecklenburg community.  I am working as hard as I can to make a positive impact here, and I look forward to continuing that work now that this matter is behind us.

Due to the timing of this news I will not be available for further comment today as I have had dental surgery scheduled for some time now.

I return to work on Monday, June 30.
