Energy Strategy on City Council Meeting Agenda - Monday, November 23 (Item # 17)

As part of the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant program (EECBG) run by the Department of Energy (DOE), the City of Charlotte is developing an energy efficiency and conservation strategy (Energy Strategy). The City has a total of 120 days to complete the strategy development process and submit it to DOE to become eligible to receive the first half of the City's EECBG's grant funding.

After developing the City's Energy Strategy and conducting preliminary energy audits of certain City buildings, more than $6.4 million of the City's $6.78 million EECBG grant will be distributed over three years for program and project implementation.

The City's Energy Strategy, inclusive of City operations and the community at large, will encompass a range of eligible programs and projects and may include building energy audits, retrofits, transportation alternatives, and the use of renewable energy resources.

Public involvement plays an important role in developing the City's Energy Strategy.  Residents, business-owners and property-owners are encouraged to participate in the process.  Public meetings and an online survey are two ways in which citizens can help shape the City's Energy Strategy.  Anyone can submit a project or program idea for the City to consider.
