The Byrne Discretionary Grants fund programs that improve the capacity of state and local justice systems. Programs fund initiatives in eight areas which include:
- data driven approaches to violent crime reduction
- funding for neighborhood-based probation and parole officers
- reducing mortgage fraud and crime related to vacant properties
- hiring civilian support staff for law enforcement
- enhancing forensic and crime scene investigations
- improving resources and services for crime victims.
CMPD applied for three grants under this program. The first is for $971,540 to target violent chronic offenders in three police divisions and to test the community prosecution concept in Charlotte. The second is for $483,677 to hire four additional crime analysts to support neighborhood crime reduction. the third is for $481,544 to hire three additional positions for the Crime Lab.
National, regional, state, and local public and private entities, including for profit and non-profit organizations; faith-based and community organizations; institutions of higher education; and units of local government. For-profit organizations must agree to waive any profit or fees for service.
