Shovel safely with these tips
Push, don’t lift You exert less energy when you push snow to the side instead of trying to lift it.
It's a workout Be extra careful if you're over 40 or inactive. Don't shovel after eating or while smoking. If you have a history of heart trouble, consult your doctor first.
Stretch Warm up your muscles first to prevent injury and fatigue.
Breathe (you AND your clothes) Wear breathable layers like cotton silk. Heavy wools don't allow sweat to evaporate.
Watch your feet Wear waterproof boots with good traction so you don't slip or fall.
Drink up Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated. Snow shoveling is no different from a tough workout at the gym or a five-mile run.
Don’t play in traffic Keep a close eye on traffic in case a vehicle slides off the road.
Stay connected Keep your cell phone with you in case of an emergency.
