fall 2012 Get Going Guide is now available online! This issue features program listings for September, October and November as well as video and photo galleries from recent Park and Rec events. The winter 2012 issue will be available in November and cover December, January and February 2013.
GOING FOR THE GOLD: SWIMMAC CAROLINA MAKES ITS MARK ON THE LONDON OLYMPICS
SwimMAC, the elite swim team at the Olympics, practices regularly year round at the
Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. SwimMAC placed more swimmers on the USA Olympic Team than any other team in the country including Cullen Jones, Kara Lynn Joyce, Micah Lawrence, Davis Tarwater and Nick Thoman. You can see a profile of the team done by WCNC Television

CAROLINAS' AMATEUR BOXING INVITATIONAL TAKES CENTER STAGE AT REVOLUTION PARK SPORTS ACADEMY
Mecklenburg Park and Recreation invites the public to see and participate in the Carolinas' Amateur Boxing Invitational at
Revolution Park Sports Academy on August 18. Weigh-ins start at 9 a.m. and bouts begin at 4 p.m. This event features some of the best male and female amateur boxers from North and South Carolina. Matches for novice and open categories in the age range of 8 - 34. Those who are interested in participating must be registered with USA Boxing. Admission is $5 for youth and $10 for ages 13 - up. BACK TO SCHOOL BASH AT BETTE RAE THOMAS RECREATION CENTER SET FOR AUG. 11
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, in partnership with the Greater Enderly Neighborhood Association, Community Alliance and Project Safe Neighborhoods, will host a Back to School Bash to help students prepare for the upcoming school year. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug.11, 2012, at the
Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center, 2921 Tuckaseegee Road in Charlotte. Participants will be able to pick up free school supplies, network with other students, receive information from several local vendors providing discounts for uniforms, haircuts, dental care and other items and enjoy refreshments and activities. Students in grades other than high school should be accompanied by an adult. The Back to School Bash is sponsored by Wells Fargo and Verbatim. LEARN ALL ABOUT ORGANIC GARDENING AT HICKORY GROVE REC CENTER
Would you like to grow your own organic vegetables in your back yard but not sure how to get started? Now is the time to think ahead to cooler days and plan that fall garden!
The Grove Park-Ravenwood Garden Club and the
Hickory Grove Recreation Center are featuring a free program on back yard organic gardening with Don Rosenberg on August 18 at the Hickory Grove Rec Center. The event begins at 10 a.m. Don is a North Carolina Master Gardener with over 25 years of organic gardening experience. He writes columns, articles and features on organic gardening, as well as regular radio and TV appearances. His first book on organic gardening is called, “No Green Thumb Required! Organic Family Gardening Made Easy,” where he explains in detail how to create a back yard garden using raised beds and weedless soil.
EXPERIENCE YOUTH SPORTS AT NAOMI DRENAN
Naomi Drenan Recreation Center will host a Youth Sports Experience Day for kids, ages 3 - 8, on August 11 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event aims to teach youth the fundamentals of various sports while also stressing the importance of good sportsmanship.
Participants will be grouped by age, assigned a chaperone and rotate among the following stations:
- Basketball
- Baseball
- Track and Field
- Football
- Soccer
- Tennis
- Jump rope
