Job Openings

The Mecklenburg County Health Department receives frequent calls regarding position vacancies. While we are interested in hiring the best qualified applicant when filling a position, time does not permit us to meet with individuals when we do not have a vacancy. Resumes and applications are not accepted by the program, but submitted directly to the Human Resources Department when positions are posted. The Human Resources Department for Mecklenburg County is located at 700 E. 4th Street in Charlotte. Applications and resumes may also be submitted online. In order to find out when a position is available, or to submit electronically, check the County Human Resources website.

About Environmental Health Specialists

The Environmental Health Specialist must be Registered with the with the NCSBEHSE (North Carolina State Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners) in order to be employed in North Carolina. The requirements for registration are found in NCGS 90A-53 and specify that the employee must:

  • be of good moral character
  • have graduated with a baccalaureate degree from a post-secondary educational institution rated as acceptable by the NCSBEHS. A minimum of 30 semester hours of credits must have been earned in the sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, physics, geology)
  • successfully complete a 5 week training course provided in Raleigh. (Mecklenburg County requires this course be completed at the first offering after hire.)
  • pass an examination designed to test for competence in the subject matters of environmental health sanitation after two years experience in the field, and prior to the completion of three years of service.

The cost of the required exam is currently $165.00 and is payable by the employee. Annual renewal of registration credentials (REHS or REHS Intern prior to completion of the REHS requirement) is currently $50.00.

Once these registration requirements have been met, the Environmental Health Specialist must obtain 15 hours of continuing education each year. The cost for attending approved training courses is paid by the Department.

Due to the registration and authorization requirements, preference is generally given to individuals who have previously completed Centralized Intern Training, who are currently registered with the NCSBEHSE, and who hold state authorizations in the programs in which they will be working.
