How do I apply and find out if I am eligible?
Utilize ePASS to complete Medicaid and/or FNS applications online.
Applications for Work First Family Assistance, Adult Medicaid, Family & Children's Medicaid, and Food & Nutrition Services may be made Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Wallace H. Kuralt Centre located at 301 Billingsley Road or the Chapin Hall located at 3205 Freedom Dr. Applicants are seen in the order of arrival. Also applications for North Carolina Health Choice - a health insurance program for low income children - may be made at the Department of Social Services or by mail. What do I need?When applying for benefits, you DO NOT have to bring any item with you. However, you will be asked to provide information while applying. To speed up the process, it would be helpful for you to bring more than one form of identification (a picture ID if possible) and proof of income with you. What to expect?Applications must be screened, evaluated for eligibility, and processed. FNS applications are processed within thirty (30) days of date of receipt; Medicaid applications are processed within forty-five (45) days. Medicaid applications for adults when a disability must be determined are processed within ninety (90) days. Work First applications are processed within forty-five (45) days.How can I check the status of my application?Contact your case manager. How do I renew my benefits?All eligibility programs require evaluation/renewal at least every twelve (12) months. If you are a current customer, you will receive information in the mail when it is time to renew. Be sure to keep your address updated with our office so that information will be sent to you timely. Work First benefits must include an in-office interview for recertification. If you are a Work First customer, you will receive an appointment letter with the date and time for your interview. If you have misplaced or lost your review paperwork, please call the Customer Connection at 704/336-3000 to request a replacement.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:You may be required to meet work requirements to continue receiving Food and Nutrition Services. Effective January 1, 2016, the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Program has a work requirement rule for adults who are ages 18 through 49, able to work and have no child(ren) under age 18 included in your FNS benefits. This requirement is often referenced as the ABAWD (Able-Bodied Adult without Dependents) work requirement. The ABAWD rule means you can only get food assistance for 3 months within a 36 month period unless you meet certain work requirements. View Potential ABAWD Notice.
Below is a questionnaire that will help to determine your ABAWD status. You are not required to answer these questions right now. However, if you do not provide updated information and it turns out that you were not eligible, you may have to pay back some of the FNS benefits you received. Whether you answer these questions now or not, you will not be charged with fraud or an intentional program violation because it is not your fault we don’t have this information yet.
