A longer term crime prevention strategy is to work with teenage youth during after school hours to guide them towards positive self development, goal setting and pursuit of education, and keep them away from street crime and violence. The YMCA was awarded a PSN juvenile grant to provide a local Teen Leadership Program, also held out of the Sherman Memorial Church of God and Christ. The program is run Monday through Thursday from 3- pm, and includes field trips and weekend events. The program provides tutoring and homework assistance, opportunities for youth to talk about issues concerning them, goal setting and leadership training, arts and crafts, sports, trips to local colleges, and scholarships to summer youth programs.
