Communities surrounding Mountain Island Lake are working together to ensure protection of the quality and usability of this valuable resource.

2006 Mountain Island Lake Symposium

Part of our on-going efforts was the Mountain Island Lake Symposium held on March 16, 2006. More than 200 people from 28 organizations and governmental jurisdictions participated.

Main goals:

Reaffirm the importance of Mountain Island Lake as a valuable resource for sustaining our communities
Gain an understanding of efforts to date as well as future opportunities for protecting Mountain Island Lake.
Develop a strategy and process for expanding cooperative efforts to include Lake Wylie.

Workshop Materials:

The Mountain Island Lake Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 2004. Officials from Ten communities, jurisdictions and agencies pledged to prevent future degradation of this high quality drinking water source. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) describes how to achieve coordinated water protection efforts and provides a framework for developing recommended measures to enhance water quality.

Mountain Island Lake supplies drinking water to 800,000 residents.

MILMOU Partners:

Following the signing of the MOU, the Work Group developed the Mountain Island Lake Watershed Protection Guidelines.

The Guidelines provide jurisdictions around the lake with water protection strategies for use at their discretion. As the Mountain Island Lake watershed continues to develop, effective, collaborative efforts for protecting water quality will become increasingly important.
