Top Ten Tips:
Select drought-tolerant species for the best chance of success.
Position plants with similar water needs together. Then you can hand-water shrubs and flowers that need it without watering the whole bed.
Pull weeds. Weeds are water hogs and draw moisture away from your plantings.
Prune plants—smaller plants require less water.
Mulch around trees, shrubs and flowers to help soil retain moisture and prevent weeds.
Do not fertilize plants or turf if they are not going to receive adequate water.
Limit turf and increase the amount of natural areas in your landscape.
Select warm-season grasses, such as Zoysia or Bermuda.
Use drip irrigation to apply water slowly and directly to the roots of plants and trees.
Water during optimal time between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
