Vest Water Treatment Plant
|
A long-standing landmark in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community, Vest Water Treatment Plant was built as a result of a drought in the 1920's. The plant, which is supplied by Mountain Island Lake, was the only treatment plant in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area until 1959 when the Franklin Water Treatment Plant opened. Since the 1920's, the plant has been upgraded twice.
In 1996, Vest Water Treatment Plant received international attention when Charlotte- Mecklenburg Utilities beat out seven national and international private sector companies in a competition for operation of the Vest plant. It marked the first time a public sector operation successfully competed against the private sector.
