In 1996, the plant made more than local history when it received national attention. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities beat out seven national and international private sector companies for operation of both the Irwin Creek Plant and the Vest Water Treatment Plant.
Utilities' winning bid, $4.2 million over the course of the five-year contract, marked the first time a public sector successfully competed against the private sector. |

Staff planted native flowers as part of the Wildlife and Industry Together (WAIT) program. The project consists of landscaping areas to encourage butterfly and bird habitats. |
