Reclaimed Water
Reclaimed water is highly treated wastewater -- normally put back into creeks, streams and lakes -- that is instead made available for irrigation purposes. The treated wastewater is usually of higher quality than the water already in the waterways. While not suitable for drinking, reclaimed water is a safe, less expensive alternative for meeting many irrigation needs.

In 1998, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities began operation of its first reclaimed water system at The Tradition Golf Course and at Mallard Creek Park. Every gallon of reclaimed water that is used to irrigate a lawn conserves a gallon of fresh, drinking water. This increases the amount of available water for use by Charlotte-Mecklenburg residents.

Environmental Management - provides for the high-level treatment of more than 78 million gallons of wastewater per day at five plants; also includes industrial sewage pre-treatment monitoring and oil & grease prevention programs.
