Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Engineering oversees more than $200 million worth of water and sewer improvement projects each year.  Utilities is committed to providing timely, accurate information to customers and the general public about work that may affect them. All projects are paid for by customers through water bills.

Water Projects

• The Southwest Water Transmission Main - is a 72-inch diameter water transmission main that will carry large volumes of drinking water to western Mecklenburg County.   Crews began construction in January 2005 and completed phase A in 2008. Phase B began in 2007 and C began section in 2009. Both will be complete late 2009.
• West Water Main - connects the Southwest Water Transmission Main with other large pipes in south Charlotte.   Most of the construction will be off the road between Billy Graham Parkway and Remount.  Construction will then follow Remount to Tryon Street.
• Vest Water Treatment Plant Upgrade - the historic plant is near the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and Brookshire Boulevard.  The upgrade includes improvements to the building, pipes and storage tanks.
• Franklin Water Treatment Plant Reservoir Expansion - This $18 million project will combine two existing reservoirs (105 million gallons total capacity) into one new 250-million-gallon reservoir during next year and a half.
• 16-inch Water Pipe Along Albemarle Road - The project consists of approximately 4,600 linear feet of new 16 inch water pipe along and across Albemarle Road from Wilgrove-Mint Hill Road to Parkton Road, connecting to existing pipes at both ends.  This project is needed to improve water flows and water pressure in the area east of I-485 along Albemarle Road.

Sewer Projects

• McAlpine Creek Sewer Improvements -This project will add capacity to the existing sewer so that it can handle peak flow events that occur during times of wet weather.
• Briar Creek Sewer Improvements - Construction of Phase 1 began August 2007.  The goal is to improve the existing system, thus protecting the environment, and provide capacity for future growth.  Once each phase is complete, 80 year old sections of pipe will be closed.
• Reedy / McKee Creeks Project - This project is under construction.  It will provide a large sewer collection line along Reedy and McKee Creeks. This project will provide sewer service to the property owners in these creek basins.
• Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion and Upgrade Project - This project will upgrade the wastewater plant at the intersection of Park Road and Tyvola Road for current and long term customer needs.
• Proposed Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility - This is near the Catawba River and would serve the Long Creek basin in Mecklenburg County.
