Vest Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities is currently working on multiple projects at the Vest Water Treatment Plant.

Built in 1924, the Vest plant is a historic landmark in Charlotte, and we're pleased to give it some needed operational improvements:

Building—Contractors are replacing the water treatment facility's roofs.  They are also installing energy-efficient windows, repainting and some indoor electrical work and asbestos abatement. Utilities will preserve the historical features of the building.  This phase started with cleaning / pressure washing and will last another five months.

Water lines—Roughly 90% of the original pipe has been replaced.  The pipe replacement is taking longer than originally scheduled.  Patton Avenue will be closed between Beatties Ford Road and Condon Street through December.  Condon Street will remain open, and access will be maintained for affected residents.  During November crews will work be side Patton Avenue.  When complete the new water pipe will improve water service and fire protection.

Water storage tanks—Utilities is reconditioning the two above-ground storage tanks inside and out to comply with OSHA standards and maintain good water quality. This will begin in December and will continue for about 10 months.

Historic Information
A long-standing landmark in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community, Vest Water Treatment Plant was built as a result of a drought in the 1920's. The plant, which is supplied by Mountain Island Lake, was the only treatment plant in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area until 1959 when the Franklin Water Treatment Plant opened. Since the 1920's, the plant has been upgraded twice.

In 1996, Vest Water Treatment Plant received international attention when Charlotte- Mecklenburg Utilities beat out seven national and international private sector companies in a competition for operation of the Vest plant. It marked the first time a public sector operation successfully competed against the private sector.
