The Briar Creek Sewer System Improvement Project

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities is adding sewer pipes along Briar Creek from the Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (Tyvola and Park roads) to Harris Boulevard. This project will enhance system performance, provide increased sewer capacity for present and future needs, and protect the water quality in Briar Creek.

Engineering services for the project are being provided by CDM. Construction on Phase 1 began August 2007.

Phase 1 under construction Summer 2007 - 2010.  Phase 2 will start construction Summer 2010.

Phase 1 (between Tyvola Road and Randolph Road) - under construction

Phase 2 (between Randolph Road and Country Club Drive) - to start construction Summer 2010.

Phase 3 (between Country Club Drive and Harris Boulevard)- TBD.

Construction Update:
Crews continue to make progress constructing tunnels and installing pipe.  See attached files for updates.

Safety - Please remember that any area along the creek that has been cleared is part of the active construction site.  For safety reasons, pedestrians are not allowed in these areas or anywhere on the construction site.  Parents, please make sure that your children are aware of the hazards and know to stay clear of this area.

Oscar Renda Contracting, Inc. and Rockdale Pipeline, Inc. were selected as contractors for construction of Phase 1. 

Crews continue to work under Myers Park High School.  Once pipe is completed in this section, sections of 80-year old sewer pipe will be abandoned.  Residents throughout the project will once again see construction trucks and crews during this time.

Phases 2
Customers along Briar Creek between Randolph Road and Country Club Drive have attended a public meetings about the alignment.  More public meetins will be held before construction begins.  Construction will start around Summer 2010.

Three Phase Construction Plan
The project has been divided into three construction phases and primarily involves properties adjacent to Briar Creek. Construction of the first phase will begin in summer 2007and take about two years to complete. Remaining phases are not scheduled and may take ten or more years to complete depending on funding and other variables.

Location of Improvements
Phase I -Improvements fall on the east side of creek from south of Tyvola Road to north of Park Road; mostly on the west side of the creek north of Park Road to north of Runnymede Lane; and on both sides of the creek from Runnymede to Randolph Road except where they are located only on the west side (about one-half mile north and south of Providence Road and one-half mile north of Colony.

Phase II - Improvements are planned to begin north of Randolph Road on the west side of the creek all the way to County Club Drive.

Phase III - Improvements will be constructed on both sides of the creek and may replace existing underground wastewater pipelines in some locations. Many improvements will be built on the east or south side of Briar Creek from Quiet Cove Court (near The Plaza/W.T. Harris area) to immediately south of Shamrock Drive. From Shamrock Drive to the south side of Country Club Drive, most improvements will be constructed on the west side of the creek.
