General Information:
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities is installing a new sewer pipeline along McAlpine Creek from the McAlpine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant to Lawyers Road. This project will enhance system performance, provide increased sewer capacity for present and future needs, and protect the water quality in McAlpine Creek. Map available in pdf format.
Phase 1 is almost complete. Phase 1 of the sewer pipe is being installed along McAlpine Creek from Rushmore Drive (south of I-485) to just north of Highway 51 (Pineville-Matthews Road). The sewer pipe will be 78-inches in diameter at I-485 and 72-inches in diameter at Highway 51.
Phase 2 is under construction (letter mailed August 2009). Phase two extends from Pineville-Matthews Road / Highway 51 to Colony Road.
The pipe will be 72-inches in diameter near Highway 51 and 66-inches near Colony Road. Phase 2 is scheduled to be in service by late summer 2011.
This portion of the project includes Carmel Country Club, 15 private properties and six properties owned by Mecklenburg County. The project route was cleared in September. Crews are starting on the Carmel Country Club property. From there, pipe installation toward Highway 51 and Colony Road will begin around March 2010. We will mail neighborhood updates throughout the project.
Phases 3 is scheduled to begin around 2011 and be in service around 2013. Check this web page for updates on maps, schedule and public meetings. You can also click on 'Notify Me' at the top right corner to receive an email when this page is updated.
When complete, these projects will provide extra capacity to existing sewer pipes.
What to Expect During Design: The most visible activity during this phase of the work will be field surveying. Activities may involve some minor clearing in areas along the creek to survey the centerline and collect other data necessary for design activities.
As the project design progresses, geotechnical work, including soils borings, will be performed at approximately 1,000 foot intervals to determine construction conditions
What to Expect During Construction: The most significant impacts of the project will occur during the construction phase. The construction will have the most impact on residents who live on the same side of the creek on which the new relief sewer will be constructed. There should be minimal impact on traffic and existing utilities.
As the construction phase nears, additional information will be supplied regarding the specific impacts that might be anticipated.
