  • More than 7,000 teenagers die each year in automobile crashes. Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for 15-to-20-year-olds.
  • One 15-to-20-year-old is injured every second in an automobile crash.
  • One teen dies every three hours in an automobile crash.
  • One out of four 16-year-old drivers will be involved in an automobile crash in their first year of driving.
  • The 16-to-20-year-old age group makes up seven percent of licensed drivers, but suffers 14 percent of automobile fatalities and 20 percent of reported crashes.
  • About 45 percent of crashes killing young people involve speed.
  • About 36 percent of crashes killing young people involve alcohol.
  • About 1,000 young adults lose their lives every year in crashes because of an impaired driver.
  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes cost society more than $137 billion every year in medical, rehabilitation and long-term care costs, lost productivity, lost tax revenue, property damage and police, judicial and social service costs.
  • Most teen fatal crashes occur when passengers - usually other teens - are in the vehicle. Two out of every three teens who die as passengers are in a vehicle driven by another teenager.
  • Seventy-nine percent of teenage drivers wear their seatbelts at all times. Lap/shoulder belts, when used, are extremely effective in reducing the risk of injuries caused by crashes.
  • Fifty-three percent of teen driving deaths occur on the weekend.
