The Planning and Design Division performs several planning tasks including creating the 2025 Long-Range Transportation Plan; assessing opportunities for better regional transportation planning; and, developing a 5-Year Transit/Land Use Plan that includes concentration of transportation and economic development within the five major corridors of Charlotte/Mecklenburg County.
The division operates four distinct programs that promote transportation alternatives, pedestrian safety and plan for improvements to Charlotte's infrastructure.
Bicycle Program
The program promotes cycling as a safe and convenient transportation option and recreational activity. Implements and updates the "Charlotte-Mecklenburg Bicycle Transportation Plan." Responsible for all bicycle issues related to transportation.
Capital Investment Program
The division creates a 5-year infrastructure plan to match the City's priority capital needs in various areas, including investments in neighborhoods, roads and more.
Pedestrian Program
Sidewalk Construction Program
Implementation of a citywide program to increase pedestrian safety through the construction of new sidewalk in Charlotte.
The division also performs traffic counts and data collection for short-range and long-range transportation planning, and projects growth and travel within Charlotte and surrounding areas in order to foresee transportation needs.
