Engineering and Operations
The Engineering and Operations Division designs, installs, operates and maintains traffic signals, road signs and pavement markings. The division consists of four sections - Electronic Systems, Implementation, Operations and Signal Systems Design.
Electronic Systems Travel in Charlotte would be chaotic if not for the Electronic System's 10 employees who operate and maintain traffic signals, traffic control cabinets, computer equipment, pedestrian signals and varicom signs at more than 600 intersections in Charlotte.
The section also maintains lane control on Tyvola Road and 7th Street, camera video detection, 33 Opticon detectors for Fire stations and 66 school flashers. The section is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Operations In order to provide efficient services to the public, Operations is divided into five units:
Sign Fabrication The Sign Fabrication unit fabricates most signs on Charlotte streets except stop signs. Approximately 12,000 signs are fabricated each year.
Sign Installation and Maintenance Following sign fabrication, signs are installed and maintained on Charlotte streets. Operations installs 7,000 news signs each year. To report a missing or damaged sign, call Operations at 704-336-2315 or submit a request online.

Pavement Marking Operations installs and maintains road markings such as white skip lines, solid yellow lines, turn arrows, school zones and railway crossings. Pavement marking crews install approximately 2,000,000 linerar feet of longitudinal lines and 800 arrows each year. View a pdf copy of the Pavement Marking Standards.
Aerial Aerial crews install and maintain overhead traffic signals, wires and pedestrian signal heads. Crews provide 24-hour emergency signal repair service to more than 600 traffic signals in Charlotte.
Construction Operations installs and maintains traffic detection wiring and other equipment that controls traffic signals.
