Public safety is a primary concern for the City of Charlotte. One of CDOT's responsibilities is to ensure that streets are safe for both motor and pedestrian traffic.

Basketball goals erected in the public street right-of-way in front of a home are a hazard.

While we appreciate the outdoor recreation basketball goals provide for youth and adults alike, they present a very serious hazard to those who play in the street. Section 19-10 of the Charlotte City Code prohibits the playing of games in city streets and is enforced by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

City Code section 19-241 prohibits unnecessary obstructions of any kind within the street right-of-way. For safety and liability reasons, CDOT requests that basketball goals be removed from the city's right-of-way. When a basketball goal is discovered on city right-of-way, CDOT will notify the owner who then has two weeks to remove the goal. If the hazard remains after that time, CDOT will remove it without further notice.
