BUSINESS PERSONAL PROPERTY

Defined as income producing tangible personal property such as equipment, furniture and fixtures, computers, leasehold improvements, etc.

North Carolina law requires business and professional personal property to be listed with the assessor during the month of January each year.

The assessment date for all personal property subject to this listing is January 1st of each year.  All personal property owned and subject to this listing must be reported for ad valorem (according to value) taxation unless specifically exempt by statute.

It is the responsibility of the owner/taxpayer to obtain a listing form from the Business Personal Property office for any business that has not received a tax form in the mail.  This responsibility includes the owner/taxpayer of the personal property to comply with and meet all the appropriate filing or listing requirements.

The Business Personal Property Division of  Property Assessment and Land Records Management (PALRM) is responsible for appraising and assessing the taxable value of business personal property.

Business listing forms are mailed on the last day of December to all businesses assessed and appraised and/or newly licensed during that calendar year.

Failure to list Business Personal Property by January 31st will result in a 10% late listing penalty.  An extension of time may be granted for submitting this listing upon written request and for good cause shown.  The extension must be requested in writing prior to January 31st.  No extension can be granted beyond April 15th.  Extension requests must list each account number and physical location of the property.
