What Storm Water Services does

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services works to:  
1) manage water quantity and
2) improve water quality for all residents of Mecklenburg County.

Managing water quantity includes:

  • Preventing or reducing the loss of life, disruption of services, and property damage caused by floods
  • Providing a quality storm drainage system that is safe, clean and cost-effective
  • Mapping floodplains and managing floodplain development
  • Preserving and restoring natural stream channels and the beneficial functions of floodplains

To improve the quality of our creeks, streams and lakes, we: 

  • Monitor pollutant levels in surface water
  • Investigate spills or illegal dumping
  • Enforce ordinances designed to protect water quality
  • Educate residents about pollution prevention
  • Restore the paths and banks of eroded or damaged streams
