Charlotte-Mecklenburg's most urban stretch of creek is being transformed!

2006—Still capped                                                     2009: Cap is gone and stream is restored

Restoring Little Sugar Creek from Central Piedmont Community College to near Carolinas Medical Center is being done in three phases:

Little Sugar Creek—7th Street to Charlottetowne Ave. (CPCC)

Little Sugar Creek—Charlottetowne Ave. to Baxter Street (Midtown)

Little Sugar Creek—Baxter to Morehead Streets (along Kings Drive)

Storm Water Services has now completed stream work from Charlottetowne Avenue to Morehead Street. The greenway in that section is to open later this year.

Near CPCC, stream restoration and the greenway are to be finished in 2010.

For decades, most of Little Sugar Creek near downtown was hidden under parking lots or overgrown with brush. The restoration project includes:

  • uncapping the creak
  • reshaping the path and banks of the stream
  • restoring natural beauty and openness
  • improving water quality
  • adding a greenway trail, park and fountain

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services also has completed or is working on restoring and improving Little Sugar Creek in or near:

     Hidden Valley neighborhood

     Cullman Avenue

     Liz Hair Nature Walk

     Freedom Park

     Westfield Road

Restoring Little Sugar Creek will not prevent it from flooding. Storm Water Services repairs erosion damage to stream banks, protects against future erosion, restores the natural function of the floodplain, and improves the health and flow of the creek.
